Following the establishment of the Republic and the decision to nationalize the railways, the "Anatolian-Baghdad Railway General Directorate" was established under the Ministry of Public Works (Nafia Vekâleti) by Law No. 506 dated May 24, 1924, to manage railway operations. To ensure the simultaneous construction and operation of railways, the "State Railways and Ports General Directorate" was established as the first independent administrative unit in the railway sector, under the Ministry of Public Works (Nafia Vekâleti) by Law No. 1042 dated May 31, 1927. In 1939, it was transferred to the Ministry of Transportation under the name "State Railways and Ports General Directorate".
The railway lines built before the Republic and operated by foreign companies were nationalized through purchase between 1928 and 1948. Our organization, which was managed as a state administration with a supplementary budget until July 22, 1953, was transformed into the "Turkish Republic State Railways Enterprise (TCDD)" under the Ministry of Transport by Law No. 6186 enacted on that date. Transformed into a Public Economic Enterprise by Decree Law No. 233 dated June 8, 1984, and having three affiliated companies, TÜLOMSAŞ, TÜDEMSAŞ, and TÜVASAŞ, TCDD was transformed back into a State Economic Enterprise by Law No. 6461, adopted on April 24, 2013. TCDD currently continues its operations as an affiliated organization of the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications.
